The first time we saw Popcorn was in "Mountain Talk". Our grandson who is 16 was so taken by this film that our next vacation was to Graham County. When we saw "The Last One" I just had to order it for him. I'm so sorry to here of his death. It's sad that the court system dealt so harshly with him knowing how sick he was.

Where did the nickname "Popcorn" come from?

Sky Sutton said...

Popcorn got his nickname from breaking a popcorn machine in a bar. Or so they say.;)

Hi,I myself & many many others are sorry for the loss of a good mountain man & a Appalachian moonshine legend like Marvin Popcorn Sutton! It's a shame you couldnt have gotten close to your father & reconsiled your differences before his death! Lessons are sometimes learned the hard way & sadly & sometimes regretfully much too late! By no means am I tryn to put new salt in a old wound here. Just sayn life is way too short for any of us to be letting things that dont really matter getting in the way of loving & being loved by the ones in our lives that really do matter!!! Popcorns spirit still lives with us mountain people in our hearts & minds & will be with us forever! Popcorn Suttons spirit cryed from the ground when they moved his body from the 1st gravesite to the 2nd! Doesnt it seem odd to you that there was not 1 but 2 Rock slides from the mountain onto the interstate? Doesnt it seem odd that both Mountain Rockslides were very close from where Popcorns Body was extracted to put him in another gravesite??? Maybe Popcorns spirit was Crying out & he was very angery & unpleased in someones decision to move his Body!? Popcorn already had his own pre-bought casket, foot marker, shovels to dig his grave & even the flowers he wanted to be put on his grave! Surely he had already told his wife pacificly where to lay his body to rest! Seems to me for 2 rockslides to occur within spitting distance of his 1st gravesite that Popcorns spirit was trying to say something in outrage!?? My question is: Who's idea & for what damn reason was Popcorns body moved????

Sky Sutton said...

Moving Popcorn's body was ENTIRELY his widow's game. She said there was vandalism. There wasn't. There's a new article coming out in the fall edition of Twisted South Magazine that tells the story of the body and the rock slides, etc.
And I'm pretty sure Popcorn's spirit brought down those land slides. My sister thinks it was Grandparents who did it because they want their son back.

hello! I am very sorry to hear about your Husband. may he rest in peace. Is there anyway I could buy a jar of his product. I have a friend who is so interested in Mr. Popcorn's art that it would just make him sooooo Happy to have Popcorn's Shine.thank you for your time.

Sky Sutton said...

Hi, I'm Sky Sutton. :) I"m Popcorn's daughter- one of many children. I'm def' not his wife. ;) So far as the likker goes blood Suttons feel that it is a name on a jar. The recipe is unknown, the stills were not built by Popcorn and since he's been dead for years he didn't run it. Hank Williams Jr. is producing a commercial moonshine just like all the others. Thank you for your interest.

Hi, Angela! So many people have sent me messages about blood lines that I keep my Big Book O' Sutton right next to my desk. I peeked in the book (which has some holes of info but is still a GREAT book) and found an Anglela born about 1957 and one born in 1960. Not that I would ever ask a woman her age, but, I'll throw a few years out there and see if one's right. ;)

I beleive it was the year 2008 while I was working in mountains building homes. My wife came up for we were to take my employs to gatlinburg for weekend. As we walked down 7th street is where I first met Marvin which he had a still set up for the public. He was not charging anything but had a donation box placed for donations. Before seeing the box I had asked Marvin could I buy some for a taste, no he replied, it is free as he sat a paper cup on top of the wood rail for my pleasure. After what seemed to be a shot I asked for another as he was already in motion placing another on the rail. As he placed the third with a smile I stated no , that is enough and he said are you sure? Yes I replied and placed a 10 dollar bill into his box with a thank you reply. As Marvin set up a few for my employs he stated he was from maggie valley . Marvin said alot I will not comment on but was as nice a man as I had ever met. I got his phone number. Later I saw what Marvin had done on the news as it was a shock for the same man I had talked to earlier was gone. I am sure as myself alot will miss Mr Marvin and at least I had the pleasure to meet him. Years has passed as I think of him and see him on the street doing what I am sure he liked best of what he did............I read above that Popcorns recipe was unknown. I had a very long conversation with Marvin and he showed me everything he did and used at least what he was making the day we talked. I thought my dad made alot in his time and did and I am familier with how it is made.It is a art that can be drank and if not only to pour out.

Sky Sutton said...

Ronnie~ Thank you for that memory of Marvin. :) Happily, Popcorn's recipe is VERY known. It's printed in "Daddy Moonshine" and "Me and My Likker".
